This is a picture of the engine lifting plate that I made. I saw the $20 lifting plates in the magazines, and I figured I could build my own. I made this out of the same 1/8th inch plate I made the welding cart shelves with.

To fabricate this, I started with a new carburetor base gasket. I used this to give me the right size base, and to show me where to drill the mounting holes. Then I cut a good size plate to form the vertical piece. To put the holes in it, I drilled with a half inch drill bit for the narrow part of the hole, and a hole saw for the big end. I did not have any pattern, but it looked like three evenly spaced holes would work nicely. After I had these holes drilled, I used a sawz-all to connect the holes. Then I hand filed the edges to get a really nice looking piece. It would have been much simpler with a plasma cutter.

I held the two pieces together with my magnetic welding “clamps”. Once I was confident I had it all lined up like I wanted it, I welded it in place. You don’t have to weld the entire joint on both sides, it will be strong enough with stitch welding. Stitch welding is when you just weld short lengths of the joint instead of the whole thing. You can see how I did that in the picture. I welded the opposite parts on the other side. So really, I did weld the whole length.
