This is the welder cart that I made to hold my MIG welder. I made it my senior year in high school, in VoAG shop. The deal in AG shop was that if you made something worthwhile, that the metal you used was free. If you used the good metal to practice your crappy welding, or just cut it up and threw it away, you had to work your debts off, cleaning shop or paying for the metal.

I designed my cart from scratch. I started out by measuring my welder and my gas cylinder. I used these measurements to give me a basic idea of the size I needed. I also planned to leave a space large enough to put a plasma cutter on the cart. Basically, I made the cart so I could put the welder on the top or on bottom shelf. That way, if the plasma cutter didn’t fit on the bottom, I could give everything the ol’ switcheroo and still fit everything on.

I built the cart out of 1x2 box tubing, and I think the shelves are made of 1/8th inch sheet metal. I used what they had, I wasn’t picky. I made a simple handle out of some nice size round tube that was in the shop. I used the Ag shop plasma cutter to cut out the plates, and a chop saw to cut the tubing. I added 4 swivel casters to the bottom to be able to move it around my barn. It helps that my barn has a cement floor.

Until recently, that extra room on bottom really hasn’t been utilized. I can hang the clamps on the handle, the helmet I hang on the cylinder valve, or just put on top of the welder itself, and there is a little space in front of the cylinder that I put the pliers and such.

I just got that plasma cutter I have been dreaming of getting, so the cart will look full now. Hopefully it will fit on the bottom! Ill put an update up when I get home....
